Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the economic impact of trade between Africa and Indonesia, with a specific focus on Kenya. The study was guided by the following objectives: to assess the trends and patterns of trade between Kenya and Indonesia from 2013 to 2023; to explore the predominant goods and commodities traded between Kenya and Indonesia during this period; to evaluate the impact of trade on Kenya’s economic growth and to investigate the challenges and opportunities for enhancing trade relations between Kenya and Indonesia. A descriptive research design was employed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Structured surveys were used to gather a comprehensive understanding of participants' perspectives. The study's findings revealed a discernible uptrend in trade volume between Kenya and Indonesia from 2013 to 2023. Agricultural products and manufactured goods dominated the traded commodities. The impact of Indonesia-Kenya trade on Kenya's economy proved multifaceted. While there were some recognized positive impacts on the overall economy and trade volume, Indonesia-Kenya trade was not seen as a major driver of Kenya’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth, employment opportunities, or substantial infrastructural improvements. The study identified a significant trade imbalance in favor of Indonesia and suggested strategies to balance trade. Trade trends between Kenya and Indonesia from 2013 to 2023 were significantly influenced by a combination of factors, namely economic policies and trade agreements, political stability, the business environment, and external economic conditions. Challenges such as regulatory obstacles, corruption, transportation and logistics issues, inflation, and language barriers were identified as affecting Indonesia-Kenya trade. Opportunities for improvement including increased investment, infrastructure development and reduced trade barriers were viewed positively by respondents. The study recommended strategies such as improving trade balance, enhancing trade policy frameworks, and integrating sustainable trade practices to foster a more equitable and robust economic relationship between Kenya and Indonesia.
