Abstract
This study, titled 'An Assessment of the Effectiveness of Change Management in Improving Academic Performance of Secondary Schools in Windhoek, Namibia,' investigated how change management influences the improvement of academic performance in secondary schools. The research aimed to examine key factors and phases of change management—identification, implementation, and evaluation affecting the improvement of the academic performance of the
Grade 11 secondary schools. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative and qualitative data from principals, heads of departments, and teachers across six secondary schools in Windhoek. The research instruments for data collection were questionnaires. The findings reveal a direct relationship between effective change management and improved academic performance in secondary schools. Secondary schools that consistently improved their results demonstrated robust change management practices, including thorough initial assessments, stakeholder engagement, resource allocation, and continuous evaluation. Conversely, schools with declining or stagnant results exhibited weaknesses in these areas. The study concluded that for change management to be effective, principals must view themselves as change agents, engage all stakeholders, employ clear visions and strategies, provide necessary resources and training, evaluate change, and maintain consistent and widespread application of new practices. The research emphasized the necessity of high-quality change management to enhance academic performance of secondary schools and provided actionable recommendations for school leaders and the ministry of education to foster better academic performance in secondary schools in Namibia.
