Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the social implications of migration in the Khomas Region of Namibia, with a particular focus on Angolan children. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, with a sample size of fifteen participants and employing thematic analysis, the purpose of the study was to determine the social implications of Angolan children migration in Khomas Region, Namibia. The findings reveal a significant misalignment between international standards and Namibia’s domestic policies, such as the requirement for refugees to obtain work permits rather than granting automatic work rights, highlighting challenges in integrating global norms with national practices. Socially, Angolan children in the Khomas Region face severe challenges, including inadequate shelter, limited access to education, and insufficient healthcare, despite temporary intervention measures. These challenges are consistent with the Push-Pull Theory, which explains migration as driven by "push" factors (e.g., severe drought and economic hardship in Angola) and "pull" factors (e.g., perceived opportunities in Namibia). The study recommends the development of comprehensive migration policies that address the specific needs of all migrant children, improved stakeholder coordination to avoid duplication of efforts, and targeted research into the push factors driving migration. Additionally, enhancing repatriation and reintegration processes is crucial for supporting children adequately in their home countries. Overall, the study underscores the importance of aligning domestic policies with international standards, improving stakeholder collaboration, and addressing the root causes of migration to manage its social implications effectively and improve the well-being of Angolan children in the Khomas Region.
