Abstract
If protection measures are not put in place, elephant populations may move from heavily forested areas to grasslands and areas with little vegetation, uprooting other species that depend on these habitats for survival. This study investigates the impact of Loxodanta africana disturbances on the community of Omatjete Village in Erongo Region, Namibia. The study used quantitative research methodology with a sample of 60 participants. The study findings revealed significant divisions among villagers about crop damage caused by elephants. About 50% reported crop damage due to elephants, while the other 50% did not see this as an important issue, this difference highlights the subjective nature of human-wildlife conflict experiences. Furthermore, the study showed a general lack of awareness and dissatisfaction with existing approaches to human-elephant conflict management. Most participants indicated that they did not have effective mitigation strategies, and those who were aware of any strategies expressed varying opinions about their effectiveness. In addition, a range of elephant damages were observed, including impacts on water supplies, crop fields, and homes, which highlighted the wider social and economic impacts of this disturbance. The study also found that elephant migration is mainly nocturnal, suggesting adaptation in response to human activities. Based on these findings, the study recommends the development and implementation of community-based conflict prevention strategies that involve communities in their design and implementation. Increased awareness and education programs on human-elephant conflict and its management are also encouraged at the local level. Furthermore, the recommendations provide for the use of comprehensive damage assessment methods that consider both tangible and intangible impacts of elephant violence aimed at Omatjete community and a more cohesive Loxodonta africana habitat, through conservation and meeting local community needs.
